Xsensor Pressure Monitoring Fact Sheet

What is XSENSOR Partnership Pressure Monitoring?
This system is being designed to continuously monitor patient body pressures on any mattress surface in order to reduce the occurrence of pressure ulcers. The prevalence of pressure ulcers in hospitals within Canada and the United States ranges from 5-33% and represent a significant burden on the quality of life as well as a financial burden on the health system.

Research Background
Pressure ulcers are areas of localized damage to the skin and underlying tissues, caused by pressure or friction, and are commonly found in elderly patients with reduced mobility and/or neurological deficits. Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) Team Members Straus, Ghali, Motamedi, Kimpton, Conly, Sargious and Flemons are helping assist Xsensor in the development of a Pressure Imaging system which is a thin flexible mattress overlay that is designed to monitor, record, and analyze patient interface pressure on a hospital bed. The W21C’s state of the art facility provides an ample testing ground for Xsensor. This technology can aid in the prevention of pressure ulcers by providing decision support to clinical staff about when to move or turn patients. This collaboration is one of the first of its kind for the Alberta Health Services (AHS), laying the administrative pathways for future ventures.
