Wireless Temporal Artery Bandage Thermometer (WiTAT)

What is WiTAT?

The Wireless Temporal Artery Bandage Thermometer (WiTAT) is a unique device that is fixed to a patient’s forehead over the temporal artery, and provides continuous monitoring of a patient’s core body temperature. The WiTAT is wireless and looks very similar to the average bandage.

Research Background

A research project involving the W21C, but taking place on the ICU, was conducted to test a new method of monitoring a patient’s core body temperature. ICU patients are more likely to have the prerequisites needed for study participation (i.e. participants will already have a bladder probe inserted for core temperature comparison) and therefore have been identified as ideal candidates for participation.

This phase of the WiTAT project compared the accuracy of the system to other, more invasive forms of core body temperature thermometers (e.g. bladder or rectal probes), as well as collected feedback from nurses and patients using the system.

Dr. Tom Stelfox, Dr. John Conly, Stan Zwierzchowski, Shandra Kimpton, Dr. Sharon Straus, James Haslett, Linda Knox, Crystal Wilson and Elise Teteris were involved in overseeing the project.
