W21C Research and Innovation Centre

W21C Research and Innovation Centre

The most familiar physical space associated with the Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) is Unit 36 - a state-of-the-art medical teaching unit at Foothills Medical Centre (FMC). The talented team of health professionals on Unit 36 is paramount in the W21C's efforts to achieve its vision of "defining the future of health care."

The W21C also represents an extended multidisciplinary health team including non-traditional members in engineering, environmental design, psychology, sociology, computer science, anthropology, communications, economics and library science.

Members of this multidisciplinary team researchers developed the W21C's Research and Innovation Agenda - designed to direct research activities and address challenges of suboptimal quality of care and patient safety.

In 2008, the W21C turned its efforts to a second phase and the creation of the W21C Research and Innovation Centre. Through funding from a private donor and government support the vision of creating the Research and Innovation Centre became a reality. The new space builds innovation capacity through co-location of health research/evaluation expertise and industry capabilities. Results achieved from these collaborations catalyzes activities in health system redesign, technology development and product commercialization.

The new Research and Innovation Centre is located on the ground floor of the Teaching, Research & Wellness (TRW) Building at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary (U of C). For more information please contact Susan Mide Kiss.
