Emergency

Researchers may be asked to leave or suspend research on the Ward in case of emergency or other Exceptional Circumstances (i.e. fire, quarantine or closure during an outbreak, influenza pandemic, safety incidents etc.)


Codes, Fire Safety and Evacuation

During your stay on the unit, you will hear a number of codes being called over the PA system. Please refer to the code sheet (on the back of your ID badge) for a quick reference to the codes and their meaning.


Who do I call during an emergency?

IN CASE OF FIRE (CODE RED): Alert others by calling out 'CODE RED' and the location.

R = REMOVE THOSE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER
E = ENSURE DOOR IS SHUT
A = ACTIVATE THE ALARM
C = CALL SWITCHBOARD - DIAL ‘600’
T = TRY TO EXTINGUISH OR CONTROL THE FIRE

STATUS ONE - means ‘smoke or fire confirmed’

STATUS TWO – means ‘conditions have escalated’

When the alarm bells are ringing 20 times a minute and ‘Code Red’ is paged for your floor or the floor above or below you; or if the alarm bells are ringing 120 times a minute:

• Close doors

• Clear corridors

• Account for patients / clients and staff

• Return to your unit or department via the stairs, if you are a staff member on a patient / client care area

• Do not let anyone leave your area

• Assist other patient / client care areas close by if they have a ‘Code Red’

• Check the panel or monitor for the location of the fire (on hospital sites), if the location is not known

Do not start any new procedures, e.g. surgeries or lab/research procedures
