Clinical Practice

Unit 36, called the 'Medical Ward of the 21st Century' due to its technologically sophisticated features, is a testing ground for the latest advancements in the delivery of care. Not only does the Ward include the newest point of care technologies, it has been designed to improve workflow, enhance patient and staff well-being, promote education and collaboration, and foster a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Every aspect of the design was approved by a clinical committee, who reviewed each feature against set criteria that included flexibility, infection control, safety, and access. Unit 36

Some of Unit 36’s distinctive features include:

  • Moveable walls that can be used to isolate patients depending on medical need
  • Duplication of gases such as oxygen, air and suction at each bedside, providing the ability to add a second patient to every room in the event of a disaster
  • A four-bed observation ward with bedside retractable toilets and dedicated support space to house the most acutely ill patients on the unit
  • Ten rooms with negative air pressure and isolation capability–ideal for managing an infectious disease outbreak
  • Dedicated education rooms to create an optimum environment for telehealth and teaching functions
  • Infrastructure that provides the capacity to test new technologies as they become available
Ongoing qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the Ward assesses how these, and other features, are impacting the delivery of care so that lessons learned on Unit 36 can be applied to future inpatient wards, such as within the new South Health Campus (SHC) currently under development, and across Canada.
