Research & Innovation

The problem of suboptimal patient safety and quality of care in Canadian hospitals is widely acknowledged and objectively documented in recent research. The Canadian Adverse Events Study (CMAJ May 25, 2004) reported that as many as 20,000 in-hospital deaths can potentially be prevented annually in Canada through improved hospital safety and quality of care. Recognizing this, a multidisciplinary group of researchers is developing the W21C Research and Innovation Agenda to direct research activities to identify ‘solutions’ to the challenges of suboptimal quality of care and patient safety. R&I

The guiding principle behind the infrastructure plans is the belief that truly transformative research requires enhanced contact between researchers and medical/nursing/paramedical personnel. This co-location of researchers and a fully functioning complex medical system will uniquely bring about collaborations that would otherwise not be possible.

The W21C’s novel approach to research has already attracted a variety of researchers, many from disciplines that do not routinely interact. In addition to the participation of individuals from the University of Calgary and the (former) Calgary Health Region/Alberta Health Services (AHS), national and international experts in safety and quality of care have positively endorsed the W21C's proposed research program.

The new W21C Research and Innovation Centre will provide new opportunities to develop, test and promote innovative solutions to the delivery of care.
