This trainee-led initiative is a culmination of events leading to a health hack competition. Challenges are identified by current medical professionals working in human and veterinarian medicine around the theme of surgery and recovery. These challenges are subsequently worked on by anyone who has a desire for innovation and change. There will be $20,000 in awards for teams with the best ideas.

INNOVATOR ICEBREAKER, NOVEMBER 2, 2017

Get to know your fellow innovators and challenge identifiers during an evening of talks from our featured guest speakers and by participating in icebreaker activities. Drinks and appetizers will be provided.

CHALLENGE PITCHES & TEAM FORMATION, NOVEMBER 3, 2017

Challenges are presented by the challenge-knower, and innovators have the opportunity to ask questions about each of the challenges. Innovators can come as groups or solo and select which challenge they would like to address. By the end of the event teams will be formed around each challenge and you’ll begin preparing for the Health Hack Competition.

HEALTH HACK WEEKEND, NOVEMBER 24 – 26, 2017

The program culminates in a 72-hour ‘make-a-thon’ style event where prototypes will be created. The teams have 3 weeks to prepare design plans and order materials for this event with the guidance of our volunteers. During the weekend event, teams will gain access to lab and manufacturing resources at the University of Calgary to build, test, and iterate on their designed solution. At the end of the weekend teams will demo their solutions and pitch the potential for real-world implementation. Awards will be presented to the top teams and resources to take the design further will be offered.
