W21C Journal Club + is proud to present: Mini W21C Research Showcase

Join us for two 15-minute presentations on W21C projects

What to Do When the Thing You’re Studying Ceases to Exist: And Advice for Other Existential Research Disasters

Presenter: Kenneth Blades, MA, Research Associate, W21C

PRESENTATION SUMMARY: Sometimes bad things happen to research projects. Not the inevitable frustrations common to research, but things that throw into question the reason for doing the project at all. These situations are distressing, particularly when funding is involved, and they don’t have straightforward solutions. But most projects can be salvaged, and perhaps be made even stronger. This presentation offers some advice, learned through experience, that you can use if you’re ever unlucky enough to need it.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To reflect critically on the circumstances beyond our control that sometimes threaten our research projects, and discuss some general ways of coping with them.

Three Years of Active Assailant Mass Casualty Exercises

Presenter: Greg Hallihan, MASc, Human Factors Program Manager, W21C

PRESENTATION SUMMARY: For the last three years, W21C’s Human Factors program has volunteered to observe and evaluate AHS Emergency Medical Services during their participation in active assailant training exercises. This presentation will describe the unique value of these exercises from an organizational preparedness perspective, and the value Human Factors research offers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1) Recognize costs and benefits of simulation based training for high severity – low frequency events

2) Define components of a simple model for assessing team effectiveness

3) Describe a process for observational data collection and synchronization

The W21C Journal Club+ is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
