Gordon Smith
Gordon Smith is a Consultant with HPI. Gordon brings 38 years of High Reliability leadership and organizing experience in civilian and military aviation, the energy industry and healthcare. A former naval flight officer with 26 years of leadership and training experience in the US Navy, he has flown over 3,000 accident-free flight hours in the F-14 and EA-6B, including combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gordon served in numerous positions designed to improve reliability in complex systems, including Training and Standardization Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, Safety Officer and Operations Officer. He commanded a squadron during a record-breaking deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While serving as the Air Officer (Air Boss) aboard the USS JOHN C STENNIS he directed all aspects of incident-free flight operations during a deployment to the western Pacific. He also developed new procedures for the first-ever simultaneous fixed-wing and helicopter operations aboard a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Gordon has also served on aircraft mishap investigation and Field Naval Aviator Evaluation Boards, as well as human factors councils, tasked with uncovering root causes of aviation mishaps. As the lead safety training consultant onboard offshore drilling rigs he performed hands-on coaching in High Reliability Leadership and Hazard Identification resulting in Zero Incident Operations.
