2018 Gairdner International Symposium

November 30, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm

2018 Gairdner International Symposium

Expectation. Opportunity. Impact.

An ever-expanding volume of data, the need to link data from disparate sources, and the increasing complexity of research design is radically changing biomedical, clinical and health services, and population health research. “Big data” approaches involve the theory, methodology and application of data analysis and data science to tackle these rapidly evolving challenges. But apart from the technological and theoretical capacity this field requires, the understanding of the potential sociological impacts and the ethical management of these developments must advance synchronously to ensure sound application in medicine and health, the overall societal good.

Hosted by the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, the prestigious 2018 Gairdner International Symposium will feature Professor Alan Lopez, recipient of the 2018 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award. Lopez co-founded the groundbreaking Global Burden of Disease study, which has driven policy changes and health-system improvements in China, the UK, India, Rwanda, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and the Philippines, through the novel application and power of “big data.”

Featured speakers also include Oxford Professor Gina Neff and Google’s Eyal Oren. Gina Neff is Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor, the Oxford Internet Institute & Department of Sociology with Oxford University, and a leading scholar in the way big data will, and will not, change the face of health, and in the social and societal ramifications that may come as a result.

What will the intersection of big data and AI look like, and what will it mean for health care and research, are among the topics that Eyal Oren, Product Manager with Google AI, will tackle.
