How Dance Improves Physical and Mental Well-being

Presenter: Justin Cancio, MSc
Justin is a dancer and educator. Having completed a BSc in Biological Sciences (University of Calgary) and an MSc in Dance Science (Trinity Laban, London, UK), Justin’s primary interest with dance is its use as an educational and community building tool. He has a broad range of dance skill and knowledge, primarily in Breaking, Krump, New Style Hustle, and Cuban Salsa. Justin is a member of Empirical Freedom, a Calgary based multidisciplinary collective specializing in Krump and Street Dance Culture.

Presentation Summary: This presentation will include an 20 minute lecture describing and discussing the various benefits of dance on physical and mental health. The lecture will include components of Mr. Cancio’s MSc thesis work in Dance Science, his personal journey in dance, and his involvement in the dance based community initiatives in Calgary. Following the lecture, Mr. Cancio will lead the group in a 30 minute movement workshop.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Develop a deeper understanding of how dance can offer holistic health benefits.
  2. Gain insight on academic and community based work with dance in Calgary.
  3. Apply movement to your body on a Thursday afternoon, and boogie!

The W21C Journal Club+ is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
