The W21C Wellness team used ethnographic observations and interviews to explore the role of Medical Teaching Unit (MTU) preceptors or attending physicians. This CIHR funded project looked to enhance understanding to help better define the role; develop orientation, mentoring and evaluation tools; and consider what parts of the role could be delegated to other health care providers. The study results highlighted how MTU preceptors interface with their complex work environment. MTU preceptors come to the role with professional skills or competencies developed through past training and experience, but as they work within the MTU, they must develop new conducts or adaptive behaviours and attitudes in order to navigate the complex and dynamic context of their work environment.
