Episode 37: Built Environmental Design

February 6th, 2015

Incorporating Human Factors into the Built Environment Design

Jonas ShultzIn this episode, Jonas Shultz, MSc, of the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA), discusses how the built environment affects patient safety and patient outcomes, and explores the evolution in how design teams have obtained input from healthcare providers and patients as part of the design process. He describes how evidence based data can be extracted from patient simulations within mock-ups, and furthermore, how this data can be used to inform design decisions in an effort to enhance efficiency and patient safety.

After hearing this episode listeners will be able to:
1.  Describe how the build environment affects patient safety
2.  Outline approaches to involve healthcare providers and patients in the design process
3.  Advocate for the use of patient simulation in mock-ups to make evidence based design decisions
