Journal Club: Risks, Burdens, and Benefits: Ethics in Human Research

Presentation Summary:

This presentation will guide attendees through the ethical analysis of a research program: starting with some of the basic principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki, and the exploration of a case study involving the use of invasive research procedures in early phase cancer trials.

Learning Objectives:

1. Introduce one of the founding principles in Human Research Ethics: Balancing Risk and Benefit

2. Understand the ethical analysis of the case study research program: Invasive Research Procedures in Early Phase Cancer Research

3. Identify potential ethical issues in a research program

4. Understand the ways in which ethical issues in research programs can be addressed.

The W21C Journal Club+ is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of the Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
