UFlourish
October 10, 2017 - October 13, 2017
FreeUFlourish helps builds positive mental health and personal resilience at the University of Calgary from October 10-13, 2017. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in various activities throughout the week, including the 5th annual Wellness Fair, workshops and much more!
What is Flourishing?
Based on the mental health research of Dr. Corey Keyes, the SU Wellness Centre has adopted a flourishing model of mental health. The key take away from Dr. Keyes’ research is that absence of a mental illness is not the same as positive mental health. Similarly, even in the presence of a mental illness, you are capable of flourishing. To flourish is to feel good about a life in which you are functioning well. Keyes identifies five factors that help you to flourish: playing, learning, connecting, interacting, and helping. By engaging in these factors on a regular basis, you can increase your positive mental health, regardless of the presence of a mental illness, or any other daily stressors.
Don’t know how to flourish? UFlourish will help you with a series of activities aimed at building your resiliency and positive mental health.
Want to get involved?
There are many ways for you to get involved and help others do so, too!
- Students: share events and workshops through your social networks and encourage your friends to come to an event with you! Take a break from school and recharge.
- Academic staff: start your class by taking a mental health minute – there is a helpful set of slides here! Encourage your students and colleagues to go to the Wellness Fair or just check in with themselves.
- Staff: gather a group of your colleagues to go for a walking meeting, do a mindfulness session or take in the Wellness Fair to learn about the resources available on campus.
UFlourish is a time for you – so get engaged and participate!
